Ihram: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide for First-Timers
Wearing ihram is more than putting on two white sheets — it's entering a sacred state of equality and devotion. Here's everything you need to know before reaching the Miqat.
Ihram is the sacred state every pilgrim must enter before performing Umrah or Hajj. It begins at the Miqat — a boundary set by the Prophet ﷺ — and is marked by specific clothing, intentions, and restrictions.
The Ihram Garment
For men, ihram consists of two pieces of unstitched white cloth: the izar (waist wrap) and the rida (shoulder wrap). Women wear their regular modest clothing with no face veil or gloves required.
Before Wearing Ihram
- Trim nails and remove unwanted hair
- Perform ghusl (full body ritual bath)
- Apply perfume to the body (not the ihram cloth) — this is the last time until ihram ends
- Pray two rak'ahs of nafl salah
At the Miqat
Make your intention for Umrah: "Labbayk Allahumma Umrah" — and begin reciting the Talbiyah continuously until you begin Tawaf.
Ihram Prohibitions
While in the sacred state, avoid cutting hair or nails, using perfume, hunting, sexual relations, and engaging in arguments. These restrictions remind us that we have stepped outside our worldly life for a higher purpose.
